            stands as a beacon for the next generation of young artists. Created by the New Orleans Society of Dance (NOSD), this after-school and weekend cultural arts program nurtures the talents of emerging student-artists—especially the Junior and Collegiate Cultural Ambassadors of the world-renowned

      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           New Orleans Baby Doll Ladies.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;

            At its heart,

      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           Dance With The Dolls

            is about more than movement. It's a mission-driven initiative to

           spark early exposure to creative careers, preserve cultural traditions,

            to transform their passions into purpose. Through dance, mentorship, and artistic collaboration, participants help sustain one of New Orleans' most cherished traditions: the historic women's folk art of Baby Doll masking and dance.

            Focused on under-resourced communities and designed for girls and young women ages 13-23,

            opens doors to real-world creative opportunities. Participants gain hands-on training in leadership, dance, visual arts, performance, and video production. Together, they produce original choreographic works, including dance videos and short films that celebrate culture and creativity. These projects are shared with the public ensuring their voices and artistry live on.

BDL Cultural Ambassadors serve as trusted mentors—offering encouragement, sharing wisdom, and helping participants build confidence, leadership, and artistic excellence.

           program runs year-round, beginning with an exciting summer session and continuing through fall and winter. Participants can (re)apply in January. Candidates who qualify are invited to a recruitment Meet and Greet in March with workshops commencing thereafter, allowing their training and relationships to deepen over time. This continuity gives young artists the space to evolve, experiment, and envision a creative future that's truly their own.

            In every community, there are culture bearers—individuals whose presence acts as both anchor and compass. For the

           Baby Doll tradition
          &#xD;

            and for generations of dancers, artists, and cultural workers, the late  Aunt Miriam Batiste was exactly that. Her legacy is not simply remembered; it is felt—in steps, in songs, in sisterhood, and in the quiet insistence that our stories deserve to be told with dignity, depth, and joy.

           To Millisia and the Baby Doll Ladies, Aunt Miriam was an irreplaceable muse. She held a rare blend of sweetness and fire—encouraging uncommon creativity in us while insisting on authenticity. She challenged our dancers to move with purpose, to know who they were channeling, and to carry ourselves with the poise of the women who paved the way.

           Aunt Miriam was a guardian of the doll-masking tradition handed down to the Baby Doll Ladies. Through her stewardship in us, our traditions remain intact—rooted, respected, and ready to evolve without losing its soul.

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           A Legacy That Lives Forward

           Although Aunt Miriam is no longer with us in body, her influence lives in every Baby Doll Lady who steps out on Mardi Gras morning, in every young Junior Baby Doll Lady and BDL Skull learning the tradition for the first time, and in every cultural worker doing the sacred labor of preserving our stories.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

           Twenty years ago, our organization conceived and coined the New Orleans “resurrection” of a once-dormant doll-masking tradition. With the blessings and guidance of our elder Doll pioneers and practitioners, we have dedicated our lives and mission to restoring, preserving, cultivating, educating, entertaining, and inspiring through this legacy.            RESURRECTION OVERVIEW:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           Established in March 2005 by New Orleans native and choreographer Millisia White, the New Orleans Society of Dance Baby Doll Ladies provides girls and women between the ages of seventeen and sixty plus a fun, productive place to get physically active, enrich their lives, and make connections with their peers. 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           In the aftermath (August 2005) of Hurricane Katrina’s subsequent record flooding, OUR dance company poured its time and talents into the collaborative mission members coined “New Orleans Resurrection,” advocating for cultural arts renewal in OUR hometown. THE New Orleans Baby Doll Ladies represents a significant paradigm shift in the Baby Dolls tradition. By this time, there weren’t any baby doll groups left on Mardi Gras to see…the tradition had been dormant for decades prior to the short-lived Rally of the Kdoe dolls in 2004. 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           We hosted a floorshow in 2007, aimed at restoring the doll-masking tradition and other elements of New Orleans culture..out of that production came the inspiration to continue the baby doll tradition …keeping dance at the forefront…
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Jazz dance and street dance is the common thread of the doll-masking tradition throughout all of the eras. As the main chosen successors, our dance company works to protect and preserve its legacy and its namesake as we are the official and only New Orleans Baby Dolls, cultivating our traditions with a high sense of aesthetics and new purpose 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           We’re renowned for our choreographic works, modern costumes, and trademark porcelain doll-like painted faces. 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           In 2009, in a customary show of solidarity and support, the Ernie K-Doe Baby Dolls co-founders Geannie Thomas, Tee Eva Perry, and the Original Baby Doll, Elder Miriam Batiste-Reed, or Aunt Miriam as the Baby Doll Ladies revere her, along with her late brother and musician, “Uncle” Lionel Batiste, dedicated their blessings, passed down precious heirlooms, and collectively shared their untold legacies with Millisia White’s New Orleans Baby Doll Ladies, thus passing the torch to the ensemble as premier culture bearer of New Orleans’ doll-masking and dancing birthright. 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;

           Within almost fifteen years of the dance company’s journey, the Baby Doll Ladies has grown to become an endearing Carnival staple in New Orleans, striving to inspire others in the process. By highlighting the essential role of dance at the cultural forefront, the New Orleans Baby Doll Ladies’ annual Mardi Gras Day Dance-Parade helps present this masking tradition in its proper historical perspective and correct place in history.

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

           Therefore, another essential goal of the New Orleans Society of Dance Baby Doll Ladies is to rescue the doll-masking tradition from stereotyping, invisibility, and obscurity. The resurgence you witness today is buoyed by the New Orleans Baby Doll Ladies Resurrection and restoration and making thetradition relevant again

             If there’s one thing the world knows about New Orleans, it’s how we preserve our traditions. Our traditions served as a life line during a traumatic time. Because the city lost so much after the storm, preservation became priority. New Orleans natives DJ Hektik and Millisia White had a vision of carrying on something related to tradition.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           “Music and dance has always been a foundation of the city. We wanted to help restore the cultural fabric of New Orleans but were unclear how. So we asked the people in our community, What should we resurrect?” The answer led me to create the New Orleans Baby Doll Ladies. Our intention was to carry the torch of our foremothers - the fierce pioneering women who first masked in 1912 challenging racial and gender stereotypes,” - Millisia White.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Here we are 19 years after Katrina, as the official culture bearers for the city of New Orleans. Over the next few months, we want to celebrate how far we’ve come and bring you on an unforgettable journey of culture and sisterhood. We are dancing on this path our elders paved for us. Get ready to jazz and shake! You’ll have an opportunity to get to know a more intimate part of our union and also see some of the behind the scenes footage of our evolution.
