Dance With The Dolls: Inspiring the Next Generation of New Orleans Cultural Ambassadors
In New Orleans, where rhythm and heritage intertwine on every corner, Dance with the Dolls stands as a beacon for the next generation of young artists. Created by the New Orleans Society of Dance (NOSD), this after-school and weekend cultural arts program nurtures the talents of emerging student-artists—especially the Junior and Collegiate Cultural Ambassadors of the world-renowned New Orleans Baby Doll Ladies.
At its heart, Dance With The Dolls is about more than movement. It's a mission-driven initiative to spark early exposure to creative careers, preserve cultural traditions, and empower young women to transform their passions into purpose. Through dance, mentorship, and artistic collaboration, participants help sustain one of New Orleans' most cherished traditions: the historic women's folk art of Baby Doll masking and dance.
Cultivating Creativity and Opportunity
Focused on under-resourced communities and designed for girls and young women ages 13-23, Dance With The Dolls opens doors to real-world creative opportunities. Participants gain hands-on training in leadership, dance, visual arts, performance, and video production. Together, they produce original choreographic works, including dance videos and short films that celebrate culture and creativity. These projects are shared with the public ensuring their voices and artistry live on.
Guided by Tradition, Mentored by Masters
What makes Dance With The Dolls truly special is its mentorship model. Guided by experienced cultural artists, dance educators, and the Baby Doll Ladies themselves, students receive personalized instruction in technique, stage presence, style, and professional development. BDL Cultural Ambassadors serve as trusted mentors—offering encouragement, sharing wisdom, and helping participants build confidence, leadership, and artistic excellence.
This mentorship extends well beyond the studio. Many participants continue receiving support as they navigate college, creative careers, and community leadership roles—reflecting NOSD's commitment to building ongoing relationships that grow alongside each artist's journey.
A Year-Round Commitment to Growth
The Dance With The Dolls program runs year-round, beginning with an exciting summer session and continuing through fall and winter. Participants can (re)apply in January. Candidates who qualify are invited to a recruitment Meet and Greet in March with workshops commencing thereafter, allowing their training and relationships to deepen over time. This continuity gives young artists the space to evolve, experiment, and envision a creative future that's truly their own.
Empowering the Future of New Orleans Culture
At the New Orleans Society of Dance, we believe that every girl in Greater New Orleans deserves the chance to step boldly into her power—to discover her voice, her artistry, and her place in the city's vibrant cultural landscape. Through Dance With The Dolls, NOSD is cultivating confident, skilled, and community-minded cultural ambassadors who carry New Orleans' spirit into the future.
By nurturing creativity, leadership, and pride in our city's heritage, we're not just shaping performers—we're shaping the next generation of cultural bearers, innovators, and changemakers.
